本曲描述放牛的老人身上攜帶著隨身袋，隨身袋裡有許多必備的東西，可以解除老人工作的勞苦，以及生活所用。歌詞簡單但非常有趣，在撒奇萊雅族的部落裡流傳得很廣，包括磯崎、撒固兒等地，也都傳唱。

新屋落成是非常重大的事，也是一件非常歡樂的日子。房屋完成時，屋主通常會宴請部落及親友。大夥兒就會吟唱這首輕快歡樂的歌曲，以示慶祝。撒奇萊雅族人興建房屋，通常都由親戚或朋友協助來興建，才能完成，因此這群夥伴功不可沒，屋主當然要好好的宴請這群有功人員。

過去的農耕並沒有機械化，因此需要大量的勞力，許多重要的農務，例如插秧、收割時，因為需要許多人力，親戚或好友之間會組成一個聯盟，互相協助。甲家農忙時，大家會一起幫助甲，等到乙家忙時，甲也會跟大家一起幫助乙，這種情形稱為換工。換工耕作歌即是描述這種情形，也同時歌頌團結合作及朋友友情的珍貴。
