對阿美族人來說，芒草是與祖靈溝通的媒介，這些芒草多長在山上，雖然祭典中需要用到的量不多，但仍需要特別上山採。香蕉葉與榕樹葉也是祭儀中常見的植物，但是比較常見的是頭目手持芒草為部落祈福。

每年七月和十二月割稻後，剩下的稻草有許多用途，像是餵牛、做成掃把和蓋雞舍的屋頂。除此之外，對孩子來說最開心的莫過於用稻草做跳繩，稻草做的跳繩很耐用，幾乎不會壞，遇水後跳繩會變得很厚重，不好甩動，但經過曬乾後就又像全新的一樣。
